THE CULTURE OF THE ENVIRONMENT

The project called LA CULTURA DELL’AMBIENTE is actively engaged in the protection of the ecosystem to which our refuge belongs.
Even a territory like the Paganella, which has been considerably exploited as an economic resource for tourism, is fragile. It needs care and attention if it is to maintain and conserve its wealth of flora and fauna.
We have therefore decided to safeguard and, if possible, improve our mountain so as to make its extraordinary natural beauties available for all to see.
This is above all a pledge we have made with ourselves. We are well aware that the environment is a primary resource for tourism and free time. But tourism can also provide an opportunity for safeguarding and enhancing the environment.
We would like to suggest a series of small gestures which our guests may make in order to protect these ecosystems and to allow future generations to enjoy them as well.

WATER

Water is a rare and precious resource in the Paganella since it is difficult to conserve. Strangely, there are no underground springs or water-bearing strata (or at least, none have so far been found). As a result, the Refuge works exclusively with the rainwater collected in the folds of the roof. This water is then purified with a modern system of ultraviolet rays. Our personnel are trained to waste as little water as possible in their daily work. In any case, the largest use of water is for flushing the toilets, so we ask our guests to use the eco-flush and not to run water unnecessarily. We also ask guests staying with us to limit their use of water to what is strictly necessary and to let us know when a change of shower curtains and towels is needed, since a large amount of water and energy is required to wash them.

MORE THAN A THOUSAND MILLION PEOPLE IN THE WORLD HAVE NO ACCESS TO CLEAN DRINKING WATER. THE NEED FOR WATER WILL INCREASE FURTHER IN THE FUTURE. 450 MILLION PEOPLE HAVE WATER CONSUMPTION BELOW 20 LITRES PER HEAD PER DAY, WHICH IS THE MINIMUM REQUIRED TO ENSURE PERSONAL HYGIENE AND SOME CLEANING. ABOUT ONE THOUSAND MILLION PEOPLE LIVE WITH LESS THAN THE BASIC NEEDS THRESHOLD (50 LITRES PER DAY). IN ITALY WE HAVE AN AVERAGE CONSUMPTION OF 250 LITRES PER HEAD PER DAY.

ENERGY

A computerized system adopted in the kitchens keeps the electrical energy of the equipment under strict control and avoids its dispersion; the rooms are all heated (with the “under-floor” system) using the most recent geothermal technology, which has zero impact on the environment. (In order not to distance ourselves too much from tradition, we have reinstated the ancient and much loved “stufa a ole” [ceramic stove] of the old Roda).

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT IS CAUSED BY A BLANKET OF GASES, OF WHICH THE PRINCIPAL ONE IS CARBON DIOXIDE, CO2, EMITTED CHIEFLY BY THE COMBUSTION OF PETROLEUM DERIVATES IN INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES, FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY, FOR TRANSPORT AND FOR HEATING HOUSES. THIS BLANKET OF GASES PREVENTS A LARGE PART OF THE THERMAL COMPONENT OF THE SOLAR RADIATION REFLECTED ONTO THE EARTH FROM LEAVING THE ATMOSPHERE, THUS PROVOKING A RISE IN THE TEMPERATURE, THE PROBABLE CONSEQUENCE OF WHICH IS THE CLIMATIC CHANGES WE ALL KNOW.

WASTE

The problem of waste disposal remains one of the hardest to resolve, since we cannot control what passing tourists leave in our bins or even in the surrounding territory. Nevertheless, we carry out differentiated waste collections within our structure. These are taken downhill and in any case, where possible, we try to adopt an careful sales policy. Since we cannot keep a check on our bins, we ask our guests, as well as passing tourists, to dispose of their waste carefully and above all not to throw it away in the environment! (Every spring, when the snow melts, cleaning the surrounding pastures of plastic items, tins, paper and other materials takes two days’ work!)

THE MERCURY OF JUST ONE THROW-AWAY BATTERY CAN POISON 800,000 LITRES OF WATER, ENOUGH TO SATISFY THE ANNUAL NEEDS OF A COMMUNITY OF 1,000 PEOPLE.

ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATIONS TO OUR GUEST

In view of all these activities, we feel it of strategic importance to communicate environmental information to our guests. This concerns not only internal rules which help us achieve our goals, but also initiatives of an environmental nature and of public transport organized on the territory.
